Why visit
- ✓ See a glacier snout up close with little effort
- ✓ Easy, mostly flat forest trail
- ✓ Great first hike or family outing
How to get there
A short transfer from Mestia to the trailhead near the Mestiachala river, then an easy 1–1.5 hour walk each way through forest, crossing a suspension bridge.
Best time to visit
Late spring to early autumn. Early season the river can run high; midsummer to September is the safest bet.
Chalaadi Glacier is the easiest way to stand in front of real ice in Svaneti. A short drive from Mestia gets you to the trailhead, then it's a gentle, mostly flat forest walk — across a suspension bridge — to the glacier snout.
It's an ideal first day: low effort, no special gear, and a genuine glacier at the end. Just don't climb onto the ice, and bring a layer for the cold air near the snout.
Things to do
- Walk to the glacier snout
- Cross the suspension bridge over the river
- Picnic in the forest clearing
