How to get there
Ushguli is about 2 hours from Mestia on a rough, unpaved road that needs a 4x4. Go as a day trip or stay overnight. The road can close after heavy rain or snow.
Best time to visit
Late June to early October, when the road is reliably open and the high meadows are green. Outside that window the road is often impassable.
Ushguli is the picture most people carry of Svaneti: stone towers stacked in a high valley at around 2,100 m, with the ice wall of Mount Shkhara behind. The four villages are UNESCO-listed, and reaching them — a rough 4x4 drive up the Enguri valley — is part of the experience.
You can come for the day from Mestia or stay overnight for the quiet after the day-trippers leave. Either way, the road and weather set the schedule, so plan with someone who watches both.
